LIGHT TRAVELLING – THE ART OF TOMMY BALOGH

Why I Create: Empowering Through Art

For over 15 years, I’ve been on an incredible journey as an artist, exploring the boundaries of contemporary art through organic abstraction, light-reactive techniques, and large-scale installations. My time at the Australian National University, where I earned my Bachelor of Visual Arts (Honours), laid the foundation for this path, but it was the passion for innovation and storytelling that truly propelled me forward.

From my university days, I realised that art was more than just a creative outlet—it was an extension of myself, a way to test the limits of my being and express what words often cannot. The academic environment not only honed my technical skills but also deepened my understanding of the emotional resonance that art can evoke. I believe that artistic expression is a reflection of the soul, and my early work was shaped by this belief.

Inspired by Damien Hurst, a sunburst pattern, created through the spinning of light-reactive and mixed media paint on a plexiglass panel to create a final result where the paint is pushed outwards from the centrifugal forces during the spinning process.

Street Art and Discovery: Finding My Voice in Newtown

My first major breakthrough came during my time in Newtown, Sydney. The vibrant streets and the eclectic energy of the neighbourhood became my studio, and the unpredictability of urban life pushed me to embrace spontaneity and risk-taking in my work.

During this time, I met Mauricio, an incredible canvas painter who became my mentor and friend. His philosophy of living in the “infinite now” resonated deeply with me. He would remind me to smile and savour the moment, and through his commitment to the present, I learned to find my own voice in the beautiful unpredictability of life. Those years taught me to relish the unknown and turn my art into a dialogue—a question rather than an answer.

The Three Disciples: A Turning Point

In 2015, I applied for and won a public arts grant, which allowed me to create a collection of works, including my largest triptych piece, The Three Disciples. This project opened the door to new collaborations, including with Gaby, an entrepreneur who offered me studio space in a multi-level carpark in Canberra City.

This partnership fueled my first large solo exhibition at the Nishi Gallery, Stretchmarks of the Universe, which earned me my first ABC article. The momentum from that exhibition paved the way for my next defining moment.

Voyage: A Defining Moment

In 2016, with support from Canberra’s Molonglo Group, I created Voyage, a monumental solo exhibition that represented a transformative milestone in my career. The 12-meter light-reactive centrepiece was not just an artwork; it was an immersive experience exploring themes of space, energy, and consciousness.

Voyage was a turning point that not only inspired audiences but also caught the attention of global innovators. This led to a residency in Germany with the founders of VIVID International and opportunities to represent Australia in the Berlin Art Fair.

Created in only a month, and a watershed moment in his career, “Voyage - Fingerprints of Consciousness” was first revealed in February 2016 at The Nishi Gallery, ACT. Working in collaboration with the head lighting technician of Enlighten, it’s a logistical marvel (aka nightmare)! Weighing 400kg, it measures 2 meters tall and 12 meters wide and required a team of 7 people just to hang.

Breaking Boundaries: Art Meets Design

As my career evolved, I began collaborating with architects, designers, and disruptors to bring art into everyday life. From bespoke backlit installations and commercial activations to footwear design through the ARTkix collection, my work has consistently pushed boundaries.

Branching out in a completely new direction, this footwear is wearable art. Titled 1of 1 Aeons, these sneakers were displayed for the first time in the foyer of The Midnight Hotel, Braddon, ACT.

For me, art is about merging utility with beauty. It’s about transforming spaces into experiences and challenging how people interact with art in their daily lives.

Seen below, is a two-story tall, backlit, interactive piece titled Odyssey, it formed part of the project titled Forbes plus Turner Odyssey. It was created in collaboration with the founding partner of Exempla Group. Shaking up what can be done in the building and construction industry, Tommy believes this piece could be one of the tallest, back-lit installations seen anywhere in Australia.

Awakening Consciousness Through Art – My partnership with Marriott’s Midnight Hotel

At the core of my practice is a simple but profound mission: to awaken consciousness and inspire personal transformation. My work isn’t just about visual impact—it’s about creating experiences that encourage introspection and curiosity.

From public installations to private commissions, every piece I create is a testament to my belief that art has the power to reawaken our capacity to observe and enjoy life. Through my art, I invite viewers to explore themes of existence, energy, and spirituality, offering a portal to new perspectives and a deeper connection to the world inside us and around us.

Some additional works as seen presented in the lobby of The Midnight Hotel in Braddon, ACT. Works seen displayed are titled Ark and Hallucination.
